Brick Masonry
Brick is the most popular form of masonry. Brick construction work is known to be durable and will last for many generations. Bricks also come in a wide variety, from more traditional styles and sizes to a variety of sizes, modern textures and more decorative colors. Different interlocking and staggered patterns can be used to further increase the strength of the wall and, when done correctly, patterned brick work has a beautiful, classic and timeless style.
Stone Masonry
Stone masonry is perhaps an even more specialized trade than brick laying. Two different types of stones can be used to create stone masonry; either “dressed” or “undressed”. Dressed stone is available in more fluid sizes and patterns, whereas undressed stone, also known as rough stone, is laid as “rubble masonry”. Undressed stone provides a less uniform, more natural appearance, and includes putting a wall together without a regular pattern. This may sound “chaotic” and it can be! It takes a lot experience to build an undressed stone wall but actually offers great-looking result.
Concrete Block Masonry
Concrete blocks, also known as cinder blocks, are laid similarly to brick, with one row of blocks being placed on top of the other in a staggered formation. Concrete blocks are much larger than traditional bricks and it takes far less time to lay them. For comparable sized projects, although typically not as aesthetically attractive, block work tends to be more affordable than bricks and provide greater fire resistance. Although in existence for decades, concrete blocks have become a very popular masonry technique and construction building material. Blocks can be bought in a variety of sizes, shapes, and specialty forms making them very versatile. Schools, factories and residential buildings all often rely on concrete blocks as the “bones” of a structure
